Decisions, decisions

Vanilla or chocolate?  Tea or coffee?  Pancakes or French toast?  We are all faced with decisions in our lives, and we are forced to come up with answers to questions daily.  But to wear, or not to wear, animal products is the question at hand.  Deciding not to wear animal products really needs to be a conscious effort.  A few months back I wrote for a website.  The creator of the website is a photographer, so he took some pictures of me to go along with my blogs.  The first blog I wrote was about animal rights, which I also posted here a few weeks ago.  In the picture, I purposely wore “leather” boots, and someone asked the question that I knew would arise: “Are your boots real leather?”  However, my boots are definitely all man-made material.
Ironically enough, not long before I wrote that first blog I went to see The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music, and PETA was outside handing out pamphlets about wearing fur.  Years ago when people went to the Academy of Music, they got all decked out in their mink coats and diamonds.  It’s not really like that anymore; still it was reassuring to see their presence.  My aunt and I just had a conversation about wearing fur, and she thinks that people should not even wear fake fur.  I disagree because I think it is fine for people to wear faux fur and faux leather.  Why not?  It isn’t real, and it proves the point that people can still look just as good wearing faux fur and leather – well, actually look even better than wearing the real thing.
The poor animals (cats, dogs, rabbits, fox, raccoons, etc…) whose fur is robbed from them are skinned alive; how horrible that must be - just unimaginable. A problem is that many of the fur products are mislabeled, and people really don’t know what they are buying. However, real is real, and it is expensive, so a person knows when he/she is buying real fur because of the cost. But many times the real fur is labeled with something like jackal when it is really cat or dog. So it is better to not buy real fur at all.
I feel it is our duty to help animals.  They have no voice and no choice: we are their voice, and we have the power of choice!

  1. I agree! This must be the most painful way to die for an animal. If we do not skin people, then we should not skin animals! It is unreal how many animals die each year for fashion purposes. Fake fur and leather is just as flattering! Selling any type of animal furs in the United States and anyone caught wearing real fur should be prosecuted to the fullest. It is sad how fast people can disregaurd animal welfare.

  2. Would you want to be skinned alive to give someone a pair or boots or a pocketbook? I certainly wouldn't. With all the synthetics, fabric and faux fur and leather there is no reason to kill animals for fasion purposes. How can anyone be that vain....

  3. Nancy, it sounds completely wrong and inhumane for a human to be skinned for a pair or boots. So how come people do not react the same way when they hear of animals being skinned for fur? There are other fashion styles available that do not involve unwanted torture to living things. I think people like fur because they want to stand out and look different. When I see someone wearing fur, I frown upon them and think how could they!

  4. Liz you are right, people wearing fur do stand out, and in my opinion, not in a good way. I also frown upon that when I see it. I understand "to each his own" but not when it comes to hurting innocent animals. I look at my dog and think "no way!" I just don't understand the thought process of some people.

  5. I must say that I've never really taken notice to whether soemone is wearing fake or real fur. I certainly wouldn't say that folks should be prosecuted for wearing real fur, however, that being said there are plenty of alternatives available.

  6. Couldn't agree more. The idea of harming any animal just to make a fashion statement is distasteful to say the least. Faux makes a statement in its own. I agree with Melissa that it makes a statement about looking just as good as the real thing without the harm involved.

  7. I agree. Why wear the real stuff if there's an alternative that looks just the same? Animals should be treated the same way we are treated. It would be unheard of to skin a person so we can be "fashionable", so why are we going to do that to an animal? Faux fur and faux leather look just the same but make a bigger statement because you're actually thinking about something else's life other than yourself and what you want.

  8. I agree with what Mike said. Besides the issues with how animals are treated in order to get real fur, why buy the real thing when the Faux fur looks just like the same thing? More often than not, people assume that whatever you have is Faux anyway because getting real fur is so expensive.

  9. This is true, I happen to own a lot of faux fur items and have cats and dogs as pets and I can not even fathom the thought of wearing a real animal. There are many other ways to be fashionable and in style then to wear a big ugly fur coat. Real fur things are actually really ugly and even if I personally had the money to buy one I wouldn't because I could use it for something else. I actually did a paper my sophomore year of high school about making real fur illegal, and when I was doing the research I could barely look at some websites because the pictures were horrific. This is a sad, sad crime to kill such innocent animals for the purpose of looking good, or showing off your wealth, especially for celebrities, they should be the role models and set the standards for what is right or wrong since they are in the public eye so much.

  10. First off, I think it should all be illegal, too. But if we can't go that far, then I think people who want to wear real fur should be forced to watch the whole process from beginning to end - from catching the animals, whether in inhumane traps or stacking 20+ dogs in one crate - to the skinning process and so on...

  11. Ever since following this site I've learned and sought out many alternatives to wearing clothes/ accessories consisting of animal products. Although I've never been a fan of fur I can be honest enough to admit that from time to time I'd purchase a leather purse, jacket, or shoes. I've always been an animal lover, but was uneducated about the torture and suffering animals are put through to make this merchandise, that does nothing other then look good. To get to the point, I went to the outlets this weekend and made a conscience effort to avoid LEATHER! I'm not gonna lie I saw a couple of items that really caught my eye, but not at the expense of an innocent animal. That is a promise I made to myself and I intend on sticking to it!

  13. Ms. Norbeck I agree that people don't know what their wearing most of the time, so why not spare the aniamls lives and wear the man made products. I believe that clothes doesn't make the person, the person makes the clothes. Even if its a fake version of what your wearing you can live with it, but be proud that your not supporting the slaughtering of aniamls.

  14. I can remember people going to wedding or out to shows and they would wear their furs. I couldn't understand then and if I saw someone wearing fur today I would just give them dirty looks. There is a lot of faux fur out there that does look real and I probably would give them dirty looks too. I hope I don't offend the ones that wear the faux furs

  15. I think we should only use animal fur or skin when the animal dies from natural causes. I dont know how we as a consumer would figure this out. I dont believe animals should be killed for their skins to keep us in fashion though.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love fur everything, fux fur and real fur all is loved ! Even though I strongly agree that no animal should be harmed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't like fur in any form. The animals used aren't even used for the rest of them. If it was Native American style and more humane, meaning they used the entire animal for something and they weren't skinned alive, that would be one thing. But chinchillas, foxes, and other small animals are just...murdered for no other reason than their hide. Leather, though, I like. It is strong and sturdy, stronger than most man-made pleather or something like that. Most is also made from larger animals and the rest of the body is used.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree 100%. To be honest i would not even know the difference if some one was wearing fake or real fur so why would someone even think about spending all the money to harm innocent animals when they can save their money and still look the same. I do not even think that it looks good to begin with, but everyone has their own opinion. This reminds of the Ace Ventura movie, "When Nature Calls" and he goes to the High class event and sees the women wearing fur her neck, so he throws her husband around his neck and wears him as if he were a piece of fur and everyone thought he was crazy. Even though he did go about it in a crazy way though it was a lot less cruel then what they do to animals, he was really proving a great point. No one would ever wear human for a fashion statement so why wear animals?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Like Christina said, I too cannot tell the difference between the real or the fake. I'm pretty sure there are many people who cannot tell the difference, therefore people should opt for the fake and spare animals' lives! I'm not a fan of fur (real or fake) and I believe that faux leather looks just as nice as the real thing!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree. Why should you go out an spend all this money to wear around a dead animal that you pretty much paid to kill. I cannot tell the difference in fake or real fur or leather either. so in my book you can save your self a ton of money and a couple animals lives if you just wore the fake stuff or maybe some whool. A sheep isnt killed for its whool it gets to stay alive and whool is going to keep your body warmer than the fur anyway. People care to much about their looks than about the world around them because like someone said earlier if you made them watch the process of the fur coat priduction they would think again. people in this world are so cold hearted i feel. Not everyone but some people!

  21. Wearing real fur not only is horrible, but in my opinion super tacky. Although faux fur and faux leather without question are much better than skinning an animal, I agree with Ms. Norbeck's family member; there should be no real or faux fur and leather fashion accessories. It puts the wrong message across when we are trying to put an end to wearing animals as a fashion statement.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Mike, I can't tell the difference, so why not wear the faux?

    ReplyDelete
  23. In todays world, we as people have soooooooooooo much. There is absolutely no reason why animals need to be tortured/skinned alive so that a person can wear, "something special". In fact, I feel just the opposite, I don't think it would be special at all. I would never be able to tell people that I'm wearing a dead animal, I would be too ashamed. There are materials out there these days, that unless your a professional furier, you wouldn't know if it is real or fake. Besides, I'm the type that if I had a real fur and something happened to it, like a spill on it, I would probably get really mad, but if it's fake and I don't have lots of money vested into it then I would just clean it up the best I could and it probably wouldn't bother me as much. You know the old saying, "less is more"? Well, that's me to a "T". The less it costs the more I would be apt to buy it...

If im shopping in a mall and i see two jackets that are similar but one is "real" while the other one is "fake" 9 times out of 10 im not even gonna be able to tell the difference so why do companies continue to skin animals to have the newest style coat. hopefully in the future we will see a change in this subject!

  25. I love leather and I love the way it smells and feels, that is just something that i cannot chage. Like, santina gambino, why cant the poachers wait until the animals actually die on their own. I guess the supply and the demand calls for the poachers to steal and kill.

  30. People have become so obsessed with the way they look that they don't stop to think where all of their expensive furs come from. It is not right and definitely not a good "fashion statement" to walk around covered in dead animal fur. There are other ways of going about being fashionable without killing innocent animals.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I feel that wearing real fur really is pointless when the fake stuff looks exactly the same, and is a third of the price. In New York I see fur sections in the stores and its like $200 for a pair of fur gloves, and why? The look of fur really isn't even that nice, at least to me personally. Fake fur or just other materials can be just as warm and are certainly cheaper. I have many fake leather boots as well as fake suede Ugg-like boots. In my experience wearing the fake stuff, I have found that they are much more weather resistant and less likely tok be ruined by rain/snow and other things. So why spend lots of money for the real materials, that are most likely going to get ruined anyway?

These coats aren't even being put to use just for an audience to look at. That is sad. 34. I do not understand why people wear real fur items in the first place. It was not until the 1920's that fur became a fashion item, before then the only people who wore fur items were cave dwellers, in that since I am referring to cavemen. It’s sad to say that people have become so obsessed with looks that they will contribute to the torture of animals by buying these fur items. If one chooses to wear fur at least make the right choice and wear faux fur.

We are human s with the power of choice and I belive we are the voice of the animals. The people who buy real furs should really look into how their coats and other clothing is made just for them to wear maybe an average of three times a year!!! No animals should be skinned alive for any reason. Its completly wrong and flat out unnecessary. When it comes to fur, leather, and feathers people should take a second look to see if its real or not.

  49. On Etsy and other online handmade shops, people make scarves that look like the fox scarves, but they are made just with cotton or other animal friendly materials and they are really adorable and much more charming than the strange things worn made of real animals. I find it unusual that women would actually wear a dead fox around their neck.

  77. Its ridiculous that the "in" fashion is what determines what fur people buy. Uggs have become extremely popular and are made with real fur, and its crazy that people will spend that kind of money on them; 1: because they are made with real fur, 2: because they are more popular than their competition, which sell almsot the exact same boots for cheaper and fake fur. You're paying for the harm they cause on the animals and for the brand name of the product.

  78. I think it's inhuman for people to think it's okay to skin animals, they would not skin humans. There's no good reason for this tragic dilemma. It's not easy to tell the difference between real and fake fur, so why do we have to use real? It always has to be about fashion and who have the better or more expensive outfit. There needs to be a change, if the people who are so interested in wearing real fur they should be warned about how the product was made before they buy it. Maybe that would make a difference in today's society and cut down the abuse to animals.

    ReplyDelete

If everybody starts wearing these clothes and showing that its okay to wear everyone will wear it. This is a good idea and I will definitely take it under consideration to help spread the word about these clothes.

  85. I agree with you; I don't feel that it's wrong to wear faux leather and fur, but it is difficult to tell the difference sometimes. Unless you're looking at the price tag of a fur, it is easy to mistake a real for a fake. I was serving tables one night and witnessed someone spill coffee creamer on a woman's fur coat. We are a very nice restaurant and the woman appeared to be very wealthy. I first suspected that the coat was real fur however, by the woman's minor reaction, quickly realized it was fake. I felt guilty for judging her when I thought the coat was real and decided that it wasn't worth the trouble of wearing faux fur.

  86. I agree that it is our duty to help the animals and boycott clothing made from real animal fur. I think if more people were aware of the conditions animals had to live in and the way they are treated, they would think twice before wearing a particular item.

  87. I feel that is an issue always seen as one side or the other when it is really more complicated than that. Yes, it is wrong to raise animals for nothing more than fur/skin. It is absolutely terrible the way that many of these furs and skins are "obtained" from live and/or mistreated animals. That being said, it is not cruel but rather wasteful to not use the skin or fur of animals that are raised for other reasons (such as food, or sheared fur as in sheep), so long as they are properly raised/fed and cared for. As with any subject there is a grey area that is all too often misconstrued or ignored.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I think that wearing a real fur is unnecessary but I agree with Mark E. that how the fur was obtained makes a difference. It IS wasteful to throw away the hide of an animal that was raised for food. It IS wrong to torture animals for any reason at all especially if it is for something as shallow and unimportant as a fashion statement.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Honestly, people only wear fur to look "good", but most do not know the behind the scenes work it took to make the fur products. The animals skinned, hurt, and killed are the ones that go through all of the rough stages so people can wear their fur. I just wish more people would make an attempt to better the lives of the animals by making more laws to keep them safer, and strictly enforcing them.

    ReplyDelete
  90. If we can make the difference between the faux and the real fur, I do not see any problem about wearing faux fur. It is inhumane to peel off the animals' skin because we need their skin to make expensive coats, boots etc...Some people do not even know/think about what these animals went through before they could wear this stuff. I hope that this blog reaches its goal which is to inform people about animal cruelty.

If you did a line up with ladies some wearing made man leather, and some wearing animal leather....I don't believe anybody by just glancing at the line of ladies would be able to accurately pick out the fake from the real. It's a shame that too many people like to brag about having the real deal, but they should be ashamed of themselves because 9 out of 10 they probably know how leather is made.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think that the use of fur, whether real or false is wasteful, as far as the cost of production is concerned. If I had to choose between real or false fur/leather I would choose false leather/fur, not just because of the possible cruelty to the animals providing the pelt, but also because the false fibers are less expensive to produce and are superior in strength and longevity compared to the natural fibers.

  93. I agree that alternative furs and leathers should be used. No animal should be harmed to satisfy anyone. Either way, clothing is clothing. Not harming animals would stop cruelty and people could were fake leathers and fur because the quality is just as good and no animal is harmed.

  94. 2. Everybody is entitled to get the look that they want whether they are going for a look with fur or leather, but that does not mean that they are entitled to take away an innocent animal's rights. Faux fur, leather, etc. is a great compromise for everyone involved and looks just as good. No animal should deserve to be skinned to death and no person NEEDS a real fur coat nor do they want to be tricked into wearing something that they think is something else.

  95. I think that wearing fur should basically be illegal because it is never gathered from the animal in a humane way. Faux fur looks exactly the same as real fur and I do not understand why paying more money for a dead injured animal is satisfying for people when they could get a cheaper and more humane piece of faux fur. I will never understand this concept and I never want to.

If you look at the history of our ancestors having to use animal skins to keep warm. BUT if you would research a little further, you would know that when our ancestors killed an animal, they used every part of that animal for something. There was no waste and they gave thanks to that animal for giving their life to them.

  109. There is no need at all to kill animals and skin them. There are plenty of products that are made out of things that are not animals and can easily keep a person just as warm as an animal product would. Fur for an animal is very over prices, is a product of animal that has been killed, is cruel, and fashion is not a number priority in life. I never really understood why so many people care what brand they wear or why people make fun of others for what they wear. Clothing is clothing and they only difference is the brand and if it is made out of animal skin or not. I personally would never buy an animal coat, Uggs, or anything on those lines.

  121. 4. Decisions, decisions

“My aunt and I just had a conversation about wearing fur, and she thinks that people should not even wear fake fur.”

Her aunt makes a good point. If people stop wearing both real and faux animal products, then real animal products will fall out of favor faster. It will be a sort of “zero tolerance” policy.

“The poor animals (cats, dogs, rabbits, fox, raccoons, etc…) whose fur is robbed from them are skinned alive.”

Why are they skinned alive? What benefit does it have on the product?

    ReplyDelete
  122. I do not buy real fur at all. I find it disrespectful to animals and hypocritical to others considering that I believe in animal rights. I think skinning animals alive just for their fur is wrong. I agree that people look just as nice in faux fur. People should not wear animal products.

I was unaware that fake fur was actually from other animals until a recent newscast said that children's coats were being recalled because the faux fur was actually made of dog.It grabbed my attention that most of the faux fur items that I have may actually be from another animal. At one time, I do believe that it was ethical to use animals for their fur. In fact, it was the only way that the early Native Americans and pilgrims were able to keep warm. The huge difference between then and now is the fact that the Native Americans needed the fur and all parts of the animals that they killed for survival. They didn't kill and skin them for sport. I believe that today we should be using faux furs and leathers instead of real since we no longer need the fur and leather for survival.

  172. I feel that animals for fur coats is wrong. However, sometimes they make the warmest material. Eskimo people for example don't have much of an option but to use fur coats. Tat is their culture and we must honor that. However, domesticated animals shouldn't be made into coats. Eddie B.

  173. I absolutely agree on the fur topic, its a vanity industry to say the least. Would i check each piece of my clothing, cologne, or hygiene products in order to ensure it wasnt tested on animals or not.... sadly i will answer that as a no. I believe in making better practices but im not an advocate

This might sound really stupid but I didn't think they really used cats and dogs for coats. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Skinning any animal is just pure evil in my eyes but I couldn't imagine walking around sporting my cats fur! The whole fur industry is pretty much unnecessary in my eyes. We don't need fur to keep warm. Killing animals for fashion is ridiculous.

  175. I think that showing others that fake leather looks good to and doesn’t kill animals to do so is great.
