The Circus is coming!

Were you excited about the circus when you were little?  Have you ever attended the circus?  Maybe you've even taken your own kids?  Well, did you hear that Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus beats its animals?

Read a little about the subject and check out some videos, then give us your thoughts:

  1. It is completely unethical to use forceful actions towards circus elephants. There is no need to used sharp hooks or rope to make the elephants perform tricks for the entertainment of people. I am sure there are simpler ways to entertain people at a circus. They should go back to having people dress up as clowns and do magic tricks.

    1. haha i agree witht the people dressing up as clowns and doing magic tricks... in this day and age with knowing that animals are being treated like this... id rather see a shitty clown doing magic tricks then seeing an animal that i know is being misstreated doing them instead... its so wrong...

  2. WOW! I'm completley amazed that in 2011 people can treat animals so poorly with no reprucussions. Does the circus actually think that people are ok with the mistreatment of animals for entertaiment purposes? I don't treat my humans that way I would like animals to be treated the same way. I agree with Elizabeth White, the circus owners should have to get dressed up and be trained so cruely!!

  3. I find the human mind and human actions fascinating; I try to understand what is going on in peoples' minds when they are mistreating animals, and the only thing I can come up with is that there is something seriously wrong with them. Many times people are taught to mistreat others, so I understand that part, but when you get old enough, take Michael Vick or example, you should know better and not use the excuse that it was all you know. When it comes to the circus and other forms of animal cruelty, greed is also a big part. If people can make money, then they have no problem hurting others for their own gain.

  4. Wow, I am socked and disappointed in what I have justed read and witnessed on the abuse of the animals that are apart of the circus. I used have fond memories of the circus and even talked about taking my grandkids there. However, now I would rather give my money to help the abuse animals than to let it help pay the salary of the abusers.

    1. My heart goes out to all those animals, I never knew the abuse that was happening, those animals have feelings and they know hurt and pain, it saddened me.

  5. That's great Linda; that's the reason I have this blog, to spread the awareness. I took my son to the circus when he was really little because I didn't know any better. I'd definitely never go again!

  6. WOW!

I always loved going to the circus as a young child, but I never realized what went on behind the closed curtains. I always saw the picket lines out front saying that they treated there animals badly, but when I got in side there was always someone saying the direct opposite. "We feed our animals good and healthy balanced diet, better then what they get in the wild."

Now knowing the truth all my child-hood memories of the circus are now some what tainted. It is no longer about seeing all the animlas doing there so called 'tricks'. Now I look back with knowledge and am disgusted for being excided to see that.

  7. I have always felt strongly about animal rights. It's almost impossible to realize how many different forms of animal abuse really exsists. I have never been to a circus because of a personal feeling of what those animals are feeling. I would like to think that with every blog, people would become more aware and somehow make those "trainers/owners" accountable for their actions.

  8. I've never been to a circus and I never plan on going because I'm TERRIFIED of clowns. Before reading those links and watching the videos I had no clue how serious the animal abuse is that comes along with a circus. Now I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not going!

  9. Given PETA's history, it is tough to take anything the organization says seriously. While I don't believe the animal abuse occurs as much as PETA would like people to think, it definitely still happens more than Ringling Bros. lets on. Any animal abuse that occurs by means of striking or hitting an animal with electrically charged whips is not ethical and needs to be stopped.

  10. This is sad, I always knew the circus was evil. I used to watch cartoons about crazy circuss' and they scared me so I have never been to an actual circus, and now I'm glad I havent been supporting them with money to do this awful thing. Elephants are smart animals, they are also some of the only mammals that mourn like humans so to know that they have such similar feelings is very heartbreaking. They can find an alternative to train these amazingly smart animals, but the other question raises, why do people really have to watch animal's do tricks? I can understand dogs with their tricks, but they get treats! Maybe they should give an elephant a treat everytime he makes a silly noise, or rolls on his back, there can probably be so many alternatives to this.

    1. yes, knowing that animals mourn like us and we know when they hurt is just sad... i would take those whips and beat the crap out of the people using the whips... finding an alternative is probably the best thing to do... animals have feelings and feel pain just like us... something needs to be done to help these animals out...

  11. I wouldn't quite say you can't take them seriously; they do a lot of good and get things done.
And animal abuse happens every single day all over the world, way more than you'd like to think; people just choose not to believe it and people don't want to watch the videos because they are too hard to watch, then we feel guilty when we don't do anything. I think that's why people get mad at the protesters, at the circus for example - because the protesters are ruining their fun night out and forcing them to see what actually goes on.

  12. When I was little the circus was a huge deal. Everyone around me would talk about going and all of the animals doing these "cool" tricks. When the circus was in town that's all anybody cared about. I've never been to the circus, but always wanted to go to one, well until now. As a child I never knew they had to beat the animals to train them. I always thought they were like a dog or something where you say the command and they get rewarded if they do so. Like hands-on training until they have it down. After seeing these pictures I am thankful I’ve never been to the circus, and probably will never go.

  13. I have gone to many circuses including the Ringing Brother Circus. I didn’t know that the elephants were being treated with cruelty. Now, I can not face going to another circus. Those poor baby elephants taking away from their mothers at a young age make me want to cry too. Then to be chained up and to inflict pain to perform these tricks is so cruel. Is there more we can do besides not going to the circuses?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Margaret, glad to hear you won't ever go back to the circus. Yes, there are other things you can do: contact your state legislatures and officials - call, write letters, and/or send emails. And spread the word!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Beating animals just for human pleasure and entertainment is wrong on every level. Number one wild animals shouldn’t be there in the first place; they aren’t supposed to be tamed. So that’s the first level of cruelty, the second is the beating part, Its funny that people think beating the animals to train them is the way to do it, but its not! No wonder the animals are hard to train because they aren’t supposed to be. I believe that these types of organizations need to be looked over by the government and something should be done.

  16. I have never been to the circus and it is mainly because I have heard about the animals being abused. If I went I would want to free the animals from their cages. I don't get how people can be so cruel to something that can't even talk. The animals don't ask to be dressed up and dance around. They just want to live their lives like us humans do. No one should want to go to the circus or anywhere that abuses the animals so that they can be entertained for a few short hours. I hate how cruel humans can be.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree that animals should not be beaten at all to train or tame them, but I do disagree that with a comment that animals are not supposed to be here, because most of the time animals get taken better care of and receive treatment that they need from the human race that they could not get in the wild. It is not fair to animals when they encounter abuse from humans, but this is why steps are being taken everyday to protect them from these heartless people and send them to jail.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't take my children to the circus for this very reason. People tell me I being mean and should let them go but I say the handlers that are abusing these elephants and all the other animals are the mean ones. Ya know when we hear a story in the new about an animal turning on it's owner people wounder why and say it was a bad animal when in fact it was bad to have held that animal captive and taking it from it's natural land. The animal in my eyes the didn't do anything wrong it reacted as if they were in the wild were they belong. I must addmit thou I have been to a circus once (my parents took me when I was young) and I could feel all the animals pain just by looking at their faces and seeing the depression in their eyes and never again did I go back on my own and never will I ever tell anyone to.

  19. I took my grandchildren to the circus about two years ago, and there was so many people demostrating against the circus, it made me feel almost like a criminal to buy my ticket. Why don't the government or somebody in authority stop this brutality. I will not be supporting this kind of imprisonment. If noone supports the circus, they would have no need to mistreat this animals

  20. Wow, I really didnt know they shocked the baby elephants....I was misled, I guess like hundreds of others that the animals are treated with care and respect. I thought they used the rewards system, not this kind of treatment. Images like this make a person wonder, what is accepted as ok behavior towards an animal???

  21. I have honestly never been to a circus nor wanted to attend one because of my extreme fear of clowns, but after seeing this and knowing that such a popular "kid friendly" place beats its animals? It makes me sick . Those poor elephants. What gets me is how a person could be so completely heartless. It makes no sense to me, it really doesn't. I can not mentally comprehend how people can bring themselves to hurt these animals the way they do.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I dont think it is right to beat animals under any circumstance. The circus is very fun to attend but people don't know what really happens behind closed doors. They are beaten and traveled in small cages. To me it it animal cruelty and something should be done !

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was actually never allowed to go to the circus for this reason. It's never right to beat the animals and make them perform under the circumstances that they have to. Then if something goes wrong and a person gets hurt, the animal is blamed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was shocked after reading this. I was never informed that animals were harmed in any way during circus acts. Just goes to show how selfish we are as humans that we harm animals for our benefit. I agree with Maxine, there should be more people advocating against this mistreatment and perhaps no one would give further support to the circus companies.

  25. Wow this is disheartning. I am not a animal lover but I do have compassion for them. I think it is horrible for the animals to be treated this for entertainment purposes. As a child it was a annual event for us to go to the circus. After obtaining this information I struggle with the thought of support the circus any longer. It is difficult because my 4 year old daughter will not understand. We will see.

  26. I learned how the Circus treats the animals, and I think it is absolutely horrible!! I have boycotted any circus since learning these facts. My children have often been upset with me, but I couldn't stand the thought of supporting any cause that is so cruel!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I went to the circus when I was 13 and have never had an interest to go back. The elephants were dirty and seemed unhappy and that wasn't even the worst part. I vividly remember the tiger show, a show where a group of tigers do tricks. I remember it vividly because during one of the stunts (and I don't mean to be crude) one of the tigers pooped in the middle of the floor. I'm not sure if the tamer didn't notice or didn't want to change her routine but the next tigers trick was to roll over. The poor tiger hesitated (for obvious reasons) but was eventually forced to roll over through the other tigers mess. It was an eye opening experience and I'll never patronize a circus again.

  28. I never cared for the circus and this just topped my reasons why. Why would someone PAY MONEY to see an animal being abused? Shouldn't everyone be repulsed by this? Why do circuses still exist?!? Come on, people how can animal abuse be wholesome family fun??

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow! It's like training a kid. Some people just can't handle it. They don't understand it takes PRACTICE and TIME. Lots and lots of TIME. and when you punish an animal for not doing what you want, just like if you punish a child for having an accident when you are trying to potty-train them, it is considered negative reinforcement. The only way to train the mind is to praise the animal/human with kind words and (treats) when they do well!

  31. Now i have watched the vidios on this and i just couldnt imagine doing something like that to an elephant or a tiger. are you serious. One of those animals can freak out and get a hold of you and i would want to be the one its mad at. i wouldnt even want to get my dog mad at me like that. I have never been to a circus in my life because i was afraid of clowns now i know why.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I cant believe they literally beat these animals into knowing there routine. My parents never took me to a circus and maybe now i know why. Then after all this beating they wonder why theres situations when animals attack there trainers in the middle of a show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I never knew that they actually beat these animals. I wanted to go to the circus that just passed, but I never purchased the tickets to go. I can't believe that they weren't able to find other training techniques for these animals, instead of abuse.

  37. i have never been to the circus.the reasons why growing up with my grandmother she will tell us the sad stories about the horrible things that go on in the circus. how the use the animals and to perform and beat them so they can obey them.but how wants to be treated that way and you never show them love. you create a monster so when they do attack you. you want to killed them its not the animal fought it yours yours.

  39. I am a little ashamed to say I have attended the circus on more than one occasion. I have been to both Ringling Brothers circus and Universal Soul Circus. Before I knew what the circus people did to their animals I would have nothing but good comments to say. Now knowing and actually seeing the truth, I feel differently. Its quite a shame to see what these monsters do to the anaimals. The videos were a little graphic to see but I feel as though everybody should watch them. The men were very curel to the animals. I assume its a scrare tatic they use. I understand the circus is suppose to be a family fun event with live tame animals but the monsters don't have to treat the animals so harsh. I wonder how the men would react if the tables were turned. No living organism should be subjected to that kind of behavior. After learning this new information I doubt I will be present at any more circus functions. In fact I will try to shed more light on the situation. More people should know the truth about the circus and how they treat there animals. Now in no way am I saying that every circus is bad but most probably are and I am sure this isn't a new trend. I feel so horrible for the animals. I just pray some rules get changed soon in order to get peace.

So just tell your friends and fam NOT to go; show them the proof! And there are circuses that don't use animals. China just banned all animal circus, and Bolivia did, too. Bob Barker helped pay to transport a bunch of animal from Bolivia to somewhere here in the US (I think Cali) for them to live out the rest of their lives in peace.

  42. I know I've been to the circus a time or two during my childhood, but I don't remember the experience ; which means it couldn't have been to great. However; here's another situation that I don't understand could still be occurring since it's publicized. How can people of authority see this and the circus still be performing city to city ? I know one thing : the circus will never get another dollar out of me. That's one childhood dream my future children will have to miss out on. They're beating these animals for no reason. I'd love to see a video of this mess gone "wrong" and an elephant finally rebelling against it's abusive "colleges".

  43. There is absolutely no reason why any animal should have to put up with this. The reason they do not do the tricks is because it is not natural for them, I will never go to a circus. This stuff is just wrong. I feel bad for all circus animals who have to go threw this.

Why do you need to beat animals and scare them for money? WHY? I don't think i'll ever understand. I honestly think it's because people don't have respect for themselves, and they can beat animals to make them feel better about themselves.. Why else would you beat an innocent living being? They can't tell you "ow that hurts" or "please stop" so, these people feel like they have control.

I never really liked the circus when I was little because they are known for giving out those huge balloons that always get popped all around me and being deathly allergic to balloons I never had the urge to go again. After seeing what goes on to train the animals I will never go to another circus. I have seen stories about how animals turn on their trainers then the animal is put down because it is a threat to humans but in reality they are just protecting themselves in anyway they know how.Hopefully in future generations they will change the way the animals are treated if enough awareness is put out there.

  58. I'm still unsure of how I feel about the circus. I watched the videos, and I do admit I am disappointed to find out that this is going on behind the scenes. I was suprised to know that the animals are being trained in such a horrible way. I definitely don't agree with the training methods of the animals, but I still don't feel that I am opposed to the circus idea. I'm sure theres plenty of people that will get mad at me for saying that, but as a child I enjoyed the circus the few times that I went. I just feel that trying to stop the production of circuses is a pointless fight. Circuses have been around since the 20's or 30's and still continue without a sign of fading out. I just feel it's something that has been around so long, that its not something that will stop just because some people are marching around outside the tent with angry signs. Some things in this country will just never change, and are just pointless to continue fighting for. I just think that the circus is one of those things that will just never stop, or change : /

However, the last time I went to the circus we were walking up to the door and there was like 40 people protesting with huge signs and yelling don't go in. I asked my grandmom about it and she said don't worry about and later went home and researched the Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus and called my gradmom and said to never take me there again. I can not believe they treat the animals the way they do, or that people can be able to take on the job. The company should be sued for what they do to the animals. No animal should have to go through that pain there is no reason for it, to see a elephant stand on its head is not worth the pain the animals have to go through. These animals are not ment to stand on their heads you don't see people getting whipped for not standing on their heads well neither should animals. I will show people the videos and spread the word about the way they treat the animals so that they will no longer go.

As much as I had Fun at the circus I don't know if it is worth it. These animals should NOT be treated like this so that people for an hour or two has a good show. These animals are not meant to be tamed or in cages and for us to allow this to go on just so we have a good time is wrong. If people on the staff go along and help hurt these animal they are just as guilty. These Circuses need to be protested not by a group or two but by everyone. Animal Cruelty should not tolerated.

  61. I am actually going to the Ringling Barnum & Bailey Circus tomorrow for my boyfriend's nieces birthday but after watching these videos I will not be going with the same excitement as I would have been and have been other times i've gone to the circus. I can't believe that any human can treat animals this way and for what, entertainment? The world has enough entertainment without the beating and hurtful things they "need" to do to get these animals to perform. They smack the elephants over and over when they're just standing there. Its horrible. Dogs and cats can be trained without being beat and that is why we have them as pets, but these wild animals don't know any better. I think they should find new acts or find a different way in training the animals properly because this should not be tolerated.

  62. I am a shamed to say that I have attended the circus on multiple occasions. After watching these videos I will never go to another circus ever again. It is so cruel how these animals are treated. You would think that these animals would be treated so much better since they earn the circus money. With that said, i did not know the beating, abuse and mistreatment that goes into getting the animals to do these stunts and tricks. These poor animals are being FORCED to do things that they do not naturally do. As joseph mentioned before me its no wonder why you hear all the time that animals fight back and seriously injure or kill the trainers. Then were made to think that it was the animals fault and that they are dangerous.

  64. I love the circus but I had no knowledge of the animals being treated in such a heartbreaking way. I would hate to be forced to jump through a ring of fire or stand on my head. I felt so ashamed and could not believe that I a nature/animal freak supported the cruel intentions that animal entertainers enforce. If the animals didn't get the short end of the stick I wish more would lash out in order for peole to realize they are NOT happy!!! And I feel bad saying this but the circus should shut down forever or base there show entirely on human performers not animals.

I was completely unaware of the training techniques used to teach an animal new tricks. It was not until I watched the movie "Water for Elephants" that I was introduced to the bullhook and its purpose. An instrument such as this should be destroyed and banned from using for any purpose. There are plenty of other acts that are performed at the circus. Forcing animals to constantly train and perform is a tradition that should come to an end. Hopefully the banning of circus animals in China and Bolivia will encourage the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey to so the same.

These individuals should be prosecuted immediately. After reading this article, I will never look at the circus the same again. Watching the human stunt performers are different than the animal tricks. The humans are there by choice, but the animals are not. Without hesitation, the animal would be euthanized right away.

I am shocked that Ringling Bros. has not been shut down yet and the trainers haven't been put in jail. Animal cruelty, in my opinion, is one of the most unethical things that some of humanity has deemed acceptable. People don't hit infant humans to get them to obey (unless they're seriously disturbed). People definitely should not hit infant animals to get them to perform tricks, and certainly should not abuse animals in general. Speciesism hits hard on animal cruelty, saying that no species is better than another and one should not mistreat or try to conquer another. I have be to the circus numerous times and I was amazed by the animals I saw performing, but in my mind I knew that it was just a show and tat their lives aren't glamorous that would be impossible. All of the animals used in a circus are wild, and meant to be left in the wild! What they put those animals through is not acceptable and thank goodness they were stopped!

  170. I have never been to the circus, and never really cared to. As an adult I still do not care to go. If I would like to see animals I normally go to the zoo. The zoo isn't the greatest place for animals either, but it is defiantly better then the circus. Beating animals is not a good way to go about it. Animals can't communicate with humans to explain things, so beating them just makes it worse.

  171. I agree that using animals for entertainment purposes is wrong. It makes no sense.

  172. I have never been to a Circus that has animals performing and neither with my son. Thankfully, this is FINALLY coming to an end and many Circus's are closing down or discontinuing animals in their acts!

  173. I remember going to the circus as a little girl and I had so much fun. I recently even went back with me nephews. After seeing this and learning what they actually do to those poor animals I feel sick to my stomach for having given any money to them...

  174. I have always wanted to go to the circus and to read about them beating their animals is heart breaking. I wish people would realize that they could train these animals without the abuse. They need to show respect to these animals.

  175. Elephants are my number one favorite animal! They are sweet and smart, and so human like. They don't deserve to beaten and stabbed like that. Not to mention the fact that animals shouldn't be used for entertainment. They deserve love and a home that treats them the way they deserve. I have never liked circuses or zoos and this proves why I don't support them.

  176. I have taken my children to the circus exactly one time. It did not impress any of us. My children were more upset about the treatment of the animals than anything else. They really did not like it at all.

  177. I used to always want to go to circuses that I had heard were coming to town. But as a kid, I didn't realize what they have to do to teach the animals. They should find techniques to teach animals without harming them.

  178. As a kid, I attended a few circuses but never knew how the animals were treated until now. I had never knew that these animals were harmed when learning the tricks they had to do, I just was amazed that were able to do them. There is definitely other ways these animals could have been taught these skills. There should be not beating of any animal. If you have to harm a animal for entertainment then we shouldn't be trying to teach animals to do things that can not usually do.

  179. I've been to a circus a time or two before and now knowing what the animals go through I will never go again. There are ways to teach without harming.

  180. Dolphins are complex intelligent animals which deserve fair treatment. I cant understand why dolphins would treat anyone poorly. While I wouldn't consider them in the same class as humans they still should be protected at all costs. Especially with their minds evolving over generations they will only become smarter as we will. They deserve fair treatment. Eddie B.

  181. I wont support any circuses. The things they do to the animals especially those poor elephants with the hook. It broke my heart seeing how young they are even starting with on some of the attractions. It sickening.

  182. Knowing that this circus beats their animals makes me sick to my stomach. Now this just ruined circuses for me but I'm glad to know what is happening so I can help in making some sort of difference.
