First I have to say after the first paragraph of the first link I was in tears. The thought of beating an innocent baby seal to death blows my mind. I can't even believe this is really happening and to find out how many babies become victim to this brutality enrages me. Can you even imagine the fear they are experiencing watching what their fate will soon be? If I think about it too long it will literally make me ill. Why isn't this illegal and if it is why aren't these psycho paths being punished? What can we do to help? I hate to judge, but after reading this it really makes me look at people who purchase animal made merchandise differently.
Kate, I guess there are a few things we can do: keep spreading the word, donate to the cause if you can, sign any petition on the subject you can find. Go to the websites of Peta, Peta2, and Care2 and sign up for their daily emails; you'll get various petitions to sign and ideas on what to do. Write to you congress men and women and to the heads of Canada and let them know nicely that you will not stand for this crap.
That is rather heartbreaking and disgusting all at the same time. It would be considered a brutal crime when a person breaks into someone's home and beats their children - so why can we invade the seals homes and beat their children to death all for fashions sake? It just doesn't seem right to me and apparently they aren't doing too much about it if this is continuing to happen. More people need to take a stand and stop this brutality.

This was very difficult to watch. I don't agree with any of it. To be so brutal is disturbing their must be alternatives. I believe that there should be laws that allow animals to maintain their dignity and at the very least not be handled this way even if their demise is inevitable.

The seal is one of my favorite animals, their playful attitude always manages to make me smile. Seeing that they are beaten to death is something that I just can't even wrap my mind around.
I know that if fur were obtained in a more humane way, that fur would be more scarce. By humane I mean that in order for an animal to be used for fur, it would have to die of natural or accidental causes. If there were no more or little fur being used in clothing and other products no one will die. On the contrary, lots of animals are being killed to obtain fur. This makes no sense. I don't think people club seals for "fun". I'm sure the practice is generations old and was done for the use of the fur. But, today we have ways to reproduce "fur". There are coats available that look like real fur, there isn't any reason to wear real fur now. Wow, we had to watch a similar video in a biology class in HS. It made some of the class sick to see the inhumane treatment of such a docile animal. The animal trade process is in disarray and needs to get regulated and punishment needs to be started. I lived in Alaska for 3 years and heard of several arrests for poaching and it seemed that it was under control until I found out for every 1 person they catch, 5 get away with it. They're a part of the natural ecosystem, and we destroy them to protect fisherman's pockets. What about the polar bears that depend on them for survival? This is horrible! I don't understand what goes through peoples head.. that they can kill a poor innocent baby seal! The blood all over the ice and the suffering of the seal makes me sick to my stomach! I just don't understand why destroy our ecosystem or anything in that matter. This needs to be stopped! What kind of person can kill a baby seal? In this day and age with all that is available to people, it is unnecessary to have to kill them. There is nothing people need from that seal, and if they are killing them for sport, then they should be punished.

Killing seals for no reason? Animal cruelty is really at an all time high. It's good to know that many countries, like the U.S., who once used seal skin, no longer do. The fact that they are still being slaughtered even though there is really no longer a use for the baby seal skin makes me sick. I find it very unconventional.

I think it is great the seals where blessed enough to have a voice. Although every seal wasn't saved many where and everything counts. I am also happy about the band on importations of seal fur because I think that really slowed down the slaughter of seals.

I cried reading these, it's disgusting that people hook seals in the eyes and mouths to prevent damaging their fur, and that when they crush their skulls, they don't completely do it so the seal is still alive while being skinned. There's no use for seal fur (I didn't even know seals had fur) so why is Canada allowing these poor innocent creatures to be brutally murdered in such a way? I laughed when I saw a sticker that said club soda not baby seals and now I feel terrible for even finding humor in that...

I never knew that seals had fur and I am even more shocked that its so popular that they have to kill off seals. I believe that every human and animal serves a purpose in this world. I don't understand why they had to kill the seals, why not just protect them?

I know I have said this before, but I'll say it again. This is a harvesting style that I can not justify. Why? Why do they need to be hunted this particular way? To beat any creature for any reason is unacceptable, and every time I have followed this link I have to look twice because I can not understand it. I hunt, I come from hunters, and I am surrounded by them as well, but I could never ever bring myself to act as inhumanely as the people who track these seals. Absolutely not.

I do understand that animals do need to be killed to provide food and such for us all, but it makes me upset to hear about a baby seal getting their heads smashed just to get their fur makes me grow a little compassion for these animals.I feel that if you are going to kill the animals to do whatever you are going to do to it,it shouldn't be done with respect. I remember I had a classmate my first year of college that did a presentation on the Canadian Seal hunting that goes on. Before he did this presentation, I wasn't aware this was happening. He showed us a video of a slaughter and it was so heartbreaking.
I was not aware that this happens to the poor seals! I cannot believe that Canada allows thousands of seals to be slaughtered for no good reason! It seems that there is a lot that goes on with animals that a large number of the population has no clue about. First I have to say after the first paragraph of the first link I was in tears. The thought of beating an innocent baby seal to death blows my mind. I can't even believe this is really happening and to find out how many babies become victim to this brutality enrages me. Can you even imagine the fear they are experiencing watching what their fate will soon be? If I think about it too long it will literally make me ill. Why isn't this illegal and if it is why aren't these psycho paths being punished? What can we do to help? That is rather heartbreaking and disgusting all at the same time. It would be considered a brutal crime when a person breaks into someone's home and beats their children - so why can we invade the seals homes and beat their children to death all for fashions sake? Beating a baby seal and skinning it alive almost seems too cruel to be real. It is refreshing to see the United States make a step towards banning a form of animal cruelty. As soon as Canada realizes that fur clothing is not as important as the life of a baby seal, or any other animal for that matter, the brutal attacks on baby seals will come to an end. I know that if fur were obtained in a more humane way, that fur would be more scarce. By humane I mean that in order for an animal to be used for fur, it would have to die of natural or accidental causes. If there were no more or little fur being used in clothing and other products no one will die. On the contrary, lots of animals are being killed to obtain fur. This makes no sense. Kill for something that will not effect us if it is done away with.

Is there any other way for humans to keep warm then to slaughter baby seals for thier fur. They were given their fur for a reason because the have to be outdoors in very cold condidtions unlike humans they don't have the opition to inside or the luxury to having a heated home.

I got upset when I saw these baby seals being slaughtered. I took my little sisters and relatives to the zoo to see these animals and they do nothing wrong to deserve what kind of torture they receive! If you are that "cold" then find a better when then killing animals to keep warm. Its not their fur that's keeping you warm ITS THEIR BLOOD!

ReplyDeleteI don't think people club seals for "fun". I'm sure the practice is generations old and was done for the use of the fur. But, today we have ways to reproduce "fur". There are coats available that look like real fur, there isn't any reason to wear real fur now. With advances in technology, we do not have to rely on "living off the land" to feed us and keep us warm. Desiree S

The fact that this is still happening even though the sale or trade of their skin or fur is illegal, is absolutely disgusting! ReplyDeleteWow, we had to watch a similar video in a biology class in HS. It made some of the class sick to see the inhumane treatment of such a docile animal. The animal trade process is in disarray and needs to get regulated and punishment needs to be started. I lived in Alaska for 3 years and heard of several arrests for poaching and it seemed that it was under control until I found out for every 1 person they catch, 5 get away with it. Not quite a good ratio when it comes to the protection of wildlife

They not only slaughter seals, but they slaughter baby seals. It seems that since most of the importing of the seal fur is banned, people are doing this as a recreational sport, which is more disturbing than doing it for a profit. People can be very cruel. They're a part of the natural ecosystem, and we destroy them to protect fisherman's pockets. What about the polar bears that depend on them for survival? What kind of person can kill a baby seal? In this day and age with all that is available to people, it is unnecessary to have to kill them. There is nothing people need from that seal, and if they are killing them for sport, then they should be punished.

After reading about the seals that have been a part of these unnecessary acts. Greed is a big factor when it comes to money, and obviously people will do anything to make some money. I think it is great the seals where blessed enough to have a voice. Although every seal wasn't saved many where and everything counts. I am also happy about the band on importations of seal fur because I think that really slowed down the slaughter of seals.

I cried reading these, it's disgusting that people hook seals in the eyes and mouths to prevent damaging their fur, and that when they crush their skulls, they don't completely do it so the seal is still alive while being skinned. There's no use for seal fur (I didn't even know seals had fur) so why is Canada allowing these poor innocent creatures to be brutally murdered in such a way? I laughed when I saw a sticker that said club soda not baby seals and now I feel terrible for even finding humor in that...

I know I have said this before, but I'll say it again. This is a harvesting style that I can not justify. Why? Why do they need to be hunted this particular way? To beat any creature for any reason is unacceptable, and every time I have followed this link I have to look twice because I can not understand it. I hunt, I come from hunters, and I am surrounded by them as well, but I could never ever bring myself to act as inhumanely as the people who track these seals. Absolutely not.

I would have never known that hundreds and thousands of seals were being killed each year for their soft fur. I tell you anything gets hunted, but I am glad that more laws are being implemented and more countries are joining the ban to stop the hunting of these animals for their fur. Canada has got to be the only country still left in the loop trying to pick up where everyone left off, for gains of more money and territory. I do hope that in the near future all this dangerous hunting and killing of species stop. I happen to like seals; one of my favorite movies is Andre.

Absolutely cannot believe that they bash baby seals heads in just for their fur. I didn't even know their fur was soft and that people actually use it or wear it! It is sickening.

These pictures of the blood all over the ice broke my heart. I had no idea seal fur was used for things. I really hope that these petitions can help put a stop to all of this cruelty. I don't get how these people can bash a baby seal's head in and then sleep peacefully at night? Blows my mind!
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that seals were killed for just their fur. The people who killed those innocent seals do not even care about what they have done and how they will effect the future. People do not that they are killing so many animals that they become endangered, which can lead to extinction. We have to be careful, stop thinking so much about the now, and think about the future. Extinction of any animal can affect humans because it messes up the food web that all animals are connected to, including humans.

I do understand that animals do need to be killed to provide food and such for us all, but it makes me upset to hear about a baby seal getting their heads smashed just to get their fur makes me grow a little compassion for these animals.I feel that if you are going to kill the animals to do whatever you are going to do to it,it shouldn't be done with respect. Wow not only are they killing animals but babies. people are so mental. this is great to see that this is com,ing to a end and that these baby seals can live in freedom.
ReplyDeletebacon, ham, chicken, (some) fish, hamburgers, the list goes on! The animals we depend on for everyday food are being just as tortured. do we stop eating them? no. If we are going to be upset with animal cruelty lets be upset with it as a whole. If you are going to eat meat, the Muslim religion has the right idea with the Halal market. They raise their sources naturally and then 'slaughter' them in the most humane way possible with on single cut and allow the blood to drain completely before packaging and selling or cooking.

Going through this blog and learning about all of the horrible torture animals go through is terrible. I'm beginning to notice that people will take the fur from literally ANY animal... I mean seriously bashing in a baby seals head? They are the cutest things on this planet.

The thought of somebody harming another animal and beating them to death is disgusting and just unethical. People are actually killing baby seals just for their fur and for such selfish reasons! This needs to be stopped immediately. I don't know how somebody can harm another being and have no remorse. Disgusting!

This is so sickening. They are literally killing baby seals for their comfort. No animal should be killed for their fur. This really needs to stop. There is so many alternatives we can use instead of killing innocent animals for theirs. I need to pay attention more to make sure that whatever I buy with any sort of fur is fake.

I remember I had a classmate my first year of college that did a presentation on the Canadian Seal hunting that goes on. Before he did this presentation, I wasn't aware this was happening. He showed us a video of a slaughter and it was so heartbreaking.

I was not aware that this happens to the poor seals! I cannot believe that Canada allows thousands of seals to be slaughtered for no good reason! It seems that there is a lot that goes on with animals that a large number of the population has no clue about. Killing these seals is terrible, and I don't know how anyone could go out and do that for fun. Maybe if I was a hunter, I would be able to rationalize it, but right now it just seems irrational and cruel.

I think this was very disturbing and a act of violence for no reason. Its kind of scary because if the people who participate in this have no problem bashing in a seal's head which are living creatures, what about humans? That one time making a participate mad can open up that type of violence which they already have displayed.
